The Klein Karoo Wine Route stretches along the R62 from Montagu in the west to De Rust in the east, and Albertinia in the south. Since the climate here tends to be dried, the vineyards are organically cultivated, and mostly grow in the soil next to the river banks. While the Route produces a variety of quality wines, special mention needs to be made of the world class port and South Africa´s champion white Muskadel.
The Scenery
This is an invitation
for an inspection visit to Montagu on the often forgotten superb scenic "Route
62" between Oudtshoorn and Cape Town.
Evelyn Holtzhausen wrote in an article in the Argus on the 27th of February
1999: "Tourists are being denied the opportunity of seeing some of the
most beautiful scenery in the south-east of the Western Cape because of bureaucratic
apathy".
The Wines
Champion Port and Muscadel wines are produced in Calitzdorp - Bo Plaas and Uitvlught winery in Montagu.
